A Perth family photographer explains the best ages to photograph your baby
When is the best age to photograph a newborn?
This is hands-down the most common question I get from Perth parents:
“When should I book my baby photos?”
And the honest answer is: there isn’t one perfect age - there’s just what’s right for you.
First things first: you don’t need to lock in a date before your baby arrives.
I keep weekday mornings and afternoons open, and I can usually fit you in within a few days of you messaging me. When your baby is here, just text me and we’ll find the best time for you once you have them in your arms.
NEWBORN: 3–10 days old
This is when babies are still tiny, sleepy, and curled up. If you’re feeling absolutely in love with that newborn bubble, this stage captures the raw emotions of meeting your baby. Their tiny size in your hands is something you’ll never forget. That said, not every parent feels that connection immediately - and that’s normal. If you’re struggling with sleep, feeding, or emotions, you might prefer to wait until your baby smiles and you feel more connected. At this ‘just born’ stage, they’re malleable for those adorable curled-up shots. Mostly asleep photos.
A little later: 3–7 weeks old
This is an underrated time. Your baby is more alert, filling out a little and you might be more in the flow of parent-life. Bubba may still be a little cross-eyed or have baby pimples (!) but I airbrush them out, don’t worry. They are a little more fussy and unpredictable but that’ why I stay for up to two hours to allow feeds or naps. I would still expect a lot of sleeping photos.
2–4 months
Your baby is even chunkier, more expressive, and might give reliable smiles. You’re seeing the personality that will grow. This stage is less “newborn” and more “tiny human” which is equally meaningful. You might value the amount of personality you can now capture and how you can dress them up a little more and they have more muscle tone for holding their body up in photos.
6–8 months
Now they’re sitting up, playful, and showing that growing personality. This is when you really start to see the child they’ll become, and that memory can hold deep value. You can dress them up now, take them outdoors which creates more options for where we go for photos. You don’t need to feel like you missed out on early photos… this is still your baby!
THE FIRST BIRTHDAY
Plenty of parents decide to wait til their child’s first birthday to capture and celebrate this first year. Your child may be on the move, at their most playful and you can turn the shoot into a celebration with a little cake!
SO, WHEN IS THE BEST TIME FOR BABY PHOTOS?
There is no right or wrong timing. The best age is the one that suits your recovery, your energy, and your season of life. Your baby will keep changing so its about choosing the moment you want captured by me. You’ll have plenty of phone snaps along the way, but these professional photos are about you as a family and so your energy matters.
No child’s age is more important than another. Honestly, you’ll miss every age once they pass!
When your baby arrives, message me - and we’ll take it from there.
Nothing is lost — it simply changes.
Every stage is fleeting, and every one is worthy.
