I did not hesitate in saying YES to photographing Chewi & Lemonie’s Tokyo wedding.
I photographed their stunning (and perfectly quirky) private Perth jetty elopement a year ago and have been hanging ever since for this ‘part 2’ – the international celebration – bringing together their nearest and dearest from across the globe to Japan! I was like a unicorn on crack getting invited to photograph both chapters so I happily trotted my convoy (man, baby and cameras) off to Tokyo – perfectly timed with cherry blossom season.
This was a wedding with oh so many parts – it could have been four weddings in one!
You’ll just have to close your eyes and imagine the ceremony as I wasn’t allowed to photograph inside the shrine. So take a moment to envisage a silence only broken by pipes and a wind that took the blossoms swimming. In front of the statuesque couple a blue masked man danced softly. There was chanting and timed claps. The air was heavy with the memory of hundreds of ceremonies held in this little vortex that defied time.
To not photograph and just remember is quite a gift for the mind.
I guess I’m more observational however as a result of being a photographer, so that’s the irony.
